Marriage Licenses

Marriage Information

A Marriage License may be issued by our office to couples if:

  • Both parties are 18 years or older
  • One or both is a resident of Gibson County, and plans to be married in the state of Indiana; 
  • If neither applicant is an Indiana resident and the couple will be married in Gibson County.

To Apply for a Marriage License:

  • Begin the application online: http://courts.in.gov/marriage
  • You will need to know basic biographical information for both applicants, as well as the following when applying online:
    • Date and reason previous marriage ended
    • Highest level of education completed 
    • Names and birth dates of dependent children under 21 years of age 
    • Parental information (if known) including name, mother’s maiden name, state of birth, and current residence
  • To finish the marriage application and to receive your license to get married, you must visit our office located at 101 N. Main Street, Princeton, IN 47670. (Closed on Federal Holidays.)
  • Both applicants must apply together, in person between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • If you have difficulty understanding or speaking English, you are welcome to bring an interpreter with you to assist you with the application process. The interpreter can help you understand the questions on the form and communicate your answers to the licensing agent.
  • Please note: Applicants must be at the Clerk’s office 30 minutes before the posted closing time.
  • Bring with you one of the following:
    • A valid, state-issued ID or Driver’s License with current address 
    • A certified Birth Certificate (not the hospital keepsake)
    • Valid Passport 
    • Military ID
  • Social Security Number will be asked (Card is not required).
  • Fees
    • The cost for a marriage license is:
    • $25 for Gibson County residence, Indiana Marriage
    • $65 for out-of-state residence, Gibson County Marriage
    • $5 per certified copy

Our office accepts cash, cashier’s checks, money orders (no personal checks), and credit cards.  Please be advised that credit cards will be charged a convenience fee. 

  • You will leave our office with two forms: the official license and a keepsake copy. Take both forms to your ceremony to be signed by you, your witnesses, and the Officiate at your wedding within 60 days.  If you do not get married within 60 days, your license will be void and you will need to reapply.

After the Ceremony: 

The signed license must be returned to our office to be recorded, either by mail or hand delivery. The form must be filed in the office of the Clerk of the County in which the marriage license was issued within thirty (30) days of the marriage solemnization. This license shall be your sufficient authority given under my signature and seal as Clerk of the Court.

After the license is returned and filed, a “Certificate of Marriage” can be purchased. Cost is $5.00 each.

You may call our office at (812) 386-6474 Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. to verify we have received and recorded your marriage. When you call, you may request a Marriage Certificate (legal proof of marriage) to be prepared for pickup at your convenience. Once we receive the signed license, the certified copies may be picked up in our office. 

Courthouse Ceremonies: 
Ceremonies may be performed in the Magistrate’s Office, in the Courthouse by appointment only.

Small Claims Division

The limit on Small Claims cases is $10,000 (except corporations).

Small Claims filed by a Corporation require a resolution form and the limit is $6,000.

The case must be filed where the action or transaction took Place.

Filing Fees

Filing fees for Small Claims cases are as follows, subject to change annually on July 1: 

  • $97.00 Initial Fee (one defendant)
  • $87.00 Initial Fee if e-filed (one defendant)
  • $10.00 For each additional defendant 
  • $28.00 Sheriff Service (one-time fee)
  • $28.00 Post-Judgment Sheriff Service (one-time fee)

Traffic Court Tickets

The Traffic Division of the Gibson  County Clerk’s Office is responsible for receipting in the payments for the Bureau of Motor Vehicle (BMV).  Failure to pay or appear on your court date may result in the suspension of your driver’s license.

A few programs to be aware of before your court appearance are as follows:

Check ALL options before paying. (Once a ticket has been paid you are no longer eligible to go on the Deferral Program. Your court date is canceled.

Defensive Driving

If you are interested in completing a defensive driving course to offset points on your license resulting from moving violations, you may have the option through the BMV. This in NOT in place of paying your ticket or going to court.

Going to Court

The Traffic Violations Bureau assigns an initial hearing date known as the infraction hearing. This hearing date is printed on your ticket. At the infraction hearing you may admit the violation or deny the violation. If you admit the violation, you will be asked to choose one of the following:

  • Admission: You may admit the violation and pay the ticket. An admission has the same effect as a court judgment. A record of this judgment will be sent to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles of Indiana and your licensing state.
  • No Contest: You may choose to pay the ticket without admitting guilt. A plea of no contest has the same effect as a court judgment. A record of this judgment will be sent to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles of Indiana and your licensing state.
  • If you choose to deny the violation, you may deny the ticket and request a court trial in front of a judge. You will be required to appear on the trial date which may not be changed by telephone.

Payment Options

Please allow 1-2 weeks for ticket(s) to be filled into the system.

Submitting payment for a ticket prior to your court appearance is an admission of the violation(s), or a pleading of nolo contendere, and will have the same effect as a court judgment. By paying in advance, your court appearance is canceled and you wave your right to a trial. Some infractions require a court appearance and are not payable before court. 

  • Paying in Person:
    • Payments can be made in person at the Gibson County Clerk’s Office, 101 N. Main Street, Princeton, IN 47670. We accept cash, cashier’s check or money order, as well as Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. Please be advised there will be a convenience fee added to process all credit/debit card transactions. Personal checks are not accepted.
  • Please have your ticket or cause number to make a payment. If you have lost your ticket, you may acquire your cause number by either going online to mycase.in.gov, or by visiting the Clerk’s Office.  
  • Paying by Mail:
    • If you wish to pay by mail, send the following: a copy of the ticket or the case number, the defendant’s name, payment (cashier’s check or money order), and a self-addressed, stamped envelope (if you wish to receive a receipt).

  • Paying Online:
    • If you want to pay your infraction online, visit https://publicaccess.courts.in.gov. If your ticket is not assessed on the website, please call the  Traffic Office at 812-386-6474 for more information.
    • Please be advised, there will be a convenience fee for this service and that fee amount will be available to you before submitting payment.
  • BridgePay Payments
      • This is for existing judgements. To make payments using BridgePay a customer must have their cause or case number. 
      • A processing fee of 3.5% will be added.

Filing for Divorce

A person may file for divorce without hiring an attorney. The clerk’s office staff cannot give out legal advice.  A basic petition form is available at the Clerk’s office or at the bottom of the page under forms. Choose either “with children” or “without”. 

The court cost is $177.00. Plus, an additional $28.00 for Sheriff service, if required.  Costs are subject to change. 

Documents must be submitted by the individual who is filing the case and signing the petition.

New divorce petitions are accepted between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.  Filings are NOT accepted after 3:00 p.m.

Once the petition is filed, court dates will be given. 

Protective Orders

A person may file a protective order without hiring an attorney.  The clerk’s office staff cannot give out legal advice.  Petition forms are available at the Clerk’s office or at the bottom of this page under forms. Choose either for an adult or for a child filed by an adult. 

There is no court cost to file for a protective order.

The petitioner must present their petition in person.  Filings are accepted between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.  Filings are NOT accepted after 3:00 p.m.

Other Case Types

For most case types we do not carry any forms. 

Although not required to file a case, most individuals will typically need an attorney for cases such as Probate, Adoption and Guardianship, just to name a few.  The Clerk Office staff cannot give out legal advice.
